City of Paris
Welcome to Paris , Bienvenue à Paris !
With these words, the poet Eustache Deschamps praised the uniqueness of the city located on the Seine river in a ballad of the 14th century. Innumerable poets, artists and writers were attracted by the beautiful city on the Seine river. One of them was Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (1854 –1891), his influence on modern literature, music and art has been enduring and pervasive. Or Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821 –1867), his works strongly influenced and changed the literature as he set himself the target to reinvent the meaning of “modernity”. Among the foremost poets of the early 20th century, Guillaume Apollinaire (1880 - 1918) is credited with coining the word surrealism andwriting one of the earliest works described as surrealist, the play “Les Mamelles de Tirésias” (1917, later used as the basis for an opera in 1947). Paris housed a lot of important French impressionists. Impressionism was a major movement, first in painting and later in music, that developed chiefly in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The principal painters were Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, Armand Guillaumin, and Frédéric Bazille, who worked together and influenced each other. Not to forget Edgar Degas and Paul Cézanne who also painted in an Impressionist style for a time in the early 1870s.
