Welcome Address
Welcome, In the name of the organisers, it is our privilege and pleasure to invite you to the 10th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry. The World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry (WFSBP) has chosen Prague as the most attractive location for our next World Congress in 2011 in the field of biological psychiatry and psychopharmacology. After the big success of the Paris meeting in 2009, Prague is the ideal setting to discuss the current advances in biology and molecular genetics, the development of new drugs based upon new molecular concepts, and the advances in modern technologies and neuroscience that will change our concepts and attitudes towards our patients. During this outstanding scientific event, opinion leaders from all around the world will share with us the newest innovations in the field and their impact on diagnoses, treatment and quality of life of our patients.
High scientific level sessions will be organized: intensive Workshops and Debates, Plenary Lectures with well known experts in the field and Symposia. Young scientists are especially encouraged to present their recent findings through Free Communications and Posters and Young Scientists Award Session will be dedicated to them. The general aim of the scientific program will be the biological and molecular basis of mental diseases which will contribute to improve our patients' everyday life. The two best psychiatric institutions in Prague are the Prague Psychiatric Center (PPC) led by Prof. Höschl, and the Dept. of Psychiatry at the 1st School of Medicine of the Charles University managed by Prof. Raboch. The Prague Psychiatric Center is a collaborating center of the World Health Organization and participates in several WHO programs. Research projects are being carried out in psychopharmacology, psychiatric demography and epidemiology, neuropsychology, epidemiology of substance abuse and addiction, psychometrics, brain neuroimaging, genetics of the major mental disorders and brain biochemistry.
As for the Charles University in Prague, psychiatry started to be taught in German in 1821, because the Czech Republic was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The first Czech Dpt. of Psychiatry at the Charles University was founded in 1886, and the first textbook of psychiatry in the Czech language was written by Prof. Kuffner in 1897. Other famous Czech psychiatrists in the history are represented e.g. by Prof. Myslivecek and Vondracek. Prague, a historical city, is also one of the most attractive locations for the 10th World Congress of Biological Psychiatry. We look forward to welcoming you in Prague from 29 May to 02 June 2011. Best wishes
